Owner's description

The Cape Town Fish Market first opened its doors in 1997 when Douw Krugmann purchased a fresh fish retail store at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. In the true spirit of entrepreneurship he devised a restaurant concept comprising a unique recipe of mixed elements which has proven to be a huge success in South Africa.

Just been there for a light supper. Worst fish cakes I have ever tasted. Weren't properly cooked and the fish "swam" through them. The "salad" was so brown and old it was a disgrace. The service and the wine were good, but won't be going back there or recommending it.
Yesterday a group of friends and I (about 10 people) went to CTFM waterfront, we waited 30 minutes before our waiter came to our table and another 20 minutes to get our drinks order - no drinks menu was even placed on our table. We ordered immediately both drinks and food and waited a further hour for our food to arrive, I had ordered the Surf and Reef which was ribs and prawn, the ribs were ROCK HARD, I literally knocked it on the hot plate and it made the sound a rock would have made had I hit the rock on the plate and the prawns looked as if it had been regurgitated. The rest of the tables medium steaks steaks were basically burnt. At the end of the night, as it was 11pm, (we arrived at 8.30) the bill showed a 20% service charge. (2 x 10%). The waiter acknowledged the bad timing of the kitchen and drinks and hoped it would be better next time, sorry my friend there won't be a next time. CTFM needs to get their house in order especially at this store as it is a premium destination.
Cape Town Fish Market (Greenstone) is pretty new to me since I moved to the area. first experience not bad, service was terrible, food was ok. Sushi was great from the sushi bar. My last experience, absolutely disappointed. had a seafood platter for 2, Muscles (sauce) was burnt. lemon butter tasted like soap (confirmed by the manager herself). when the waitress asked if we want grilled or fried calamari with our platter, we said grilled please. she though that meant upgrade to baby squid for some reason, which was a sweet type of sauce (very unexpected) and does not explain this in the menu under platter for 2. I would really love to know who quality controls the food before it comes to the table. Service got worse from my first experience. In my opinion you really need to ensure your staff are trained properly including the manager on duty. Saddened by my experience.
I TOOK 3 OF MY GUESTS TO CTFM AT V&A AND WHEN WE ARRIVED WE GOT A WARM WELCOME FROM THE HOST ONCE WE GOT SEATED THE WAITER CAME ALONG AND WE PLACED OUR ORDERS! WE ORDERED 12 LOBSTERS AND 2 HOUTBAY PLATTERS JUST FOR THE FOUR OF US WE REALLY ENJOYED THE FOOD, THE LOBSTERS WAS GREAT!!! ANYWAY THE BILL CAME TO ALMOST R 4000 WHICH WAS A GOOD PRICE FOR SUCH GREAT FOOD, I PAID THE BILL AND TIPPED THE WAITER R 100 THEN WE LEFT THE RESTAURANT. WHEN WE WERE ABOUT 50 METERS OUTSIDE THE PREMISES THE WAITER CAME RUNNING BEHIND US AND SAID THE HE FOUND A PIECE OF PAPER AND IF IT IS OF ANY IMPORTANCE TO US AND I SAID NO AND THEN THE VERY NEXT THING HE SAID IS "OH YOU FORGOT TO PAY THE 10% EXTRA,!" THEN I ASKED HIM WHAT 10% AND HE SAID "FOR THE SERVICE FEE". I TOLD HIM BUT WE WERE ONLY 4 PEOPLE BUT HE INSISTED ON A 10% EXTRA... IT WAS ONLY WHEN I SAID TO THE WAITER LETS GO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER THEN HE CAN EXPLAIN TO ME WHY I SHOULD PAY THAT 10% !! HE THEN BACKED DOWN AND SAID "NO' ITS OK! AND THEN AS QUICK AS HE CAME HE DISAPPEARED!!! I WAS FURIOUS I MEAN WHY DID HE DO THAT!,WHY SPOIL SUCH A GOOD EVENING AFTER WE HAD SUCH A GREAT MEAL.... I REALLY WAS SO DISAPPOINTED!!! WILL I TAKE MY GUESTS TO CTFM AGAIN??? I DONT KNOW! THE WAITER MIGHT JUST ASK FOR 20% NEXT TIME HE SEE ME!
Last week we went to the new Cape Town Fish Market at the V&A Waterfront; none of our table had been to one in years and so were interested to try the new V&A Waterfront branch at the Clocktower. While the new setting will certainly attract diners, more so visitors I presume, with its new deck /outdoor space, the food needs to be improved if it wants returning customers. The sushi was alright, but the portions are small and before you know it you might be paying more than Willoughby's & Co for an eight piece portion (e.g. 2 pieces of Rainbow Rolls - black plate- for R51). Our main meals were all very average to disappointing - the prawns had not been de-veined and the grilled calamari was unfortunately grilled in a sticky / sweet chilli type sauce. Perhaps one should prepare customers by mentioning to them beforehand that they are prepared that way to avoid disappointments when expecting a simple grilling in lemon, or at least give them the option. Unfortunately, we won't be back and would rather go to a local Ocean Basket for better value and far better food than back to Cape Town Fish Market.
